  Arrow Cloud over Moscou
Citation:
Muscovites reported seeing a cloud in the shape of a halo hovering over the city's Western District. Meteorologists though rejected any theories of the supernatural calling it an optical effect, reported The Daily Mail . A spokesman from the city's weather forecast said, "This is purely an optical effect, although it does look impressive."
The Sun newspaper spoke with Nick Pope, a former UFO analyst for UK's Ministry of Defense , who said that talk of the "halo" cloud was a hot topic on the Internet. "Theories range from it being an alien mothership, proof of Russian weather modification technology - a weather weapon - or even a sign of the end of the world."
According to the NOAA Web site a halo or ring may form with cirrostratus clouds. "When sunlight or moonlight passes through the hexagonal-shaped ice crystals of cirrostratus clouds, the light is dispersed or refracted in such a way that a familiar ring or halo may form."
With Halloween only a few weeks away, a UFO scare and full-blown Internet buzz seem more fun than a scientific explanation. The Christian Science Monitor writes that all the elements for a UFO scare are there: "Grainy and shaky video footage. An 'unexplained' hovering circular formation cast against a dreary, gray sky. The female voice of a concerned-sounding Russian newscaster emanating from the car radio."
Watch a Russian news report of the "halo" cloud . Or have a look at the footage below and decide. The clip of the phenomenon has been posted to YouTube and as of Wednesday it has over 700,000 views:

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - A "halo" cloud was seen over Moscow last Wednesday and its strange shape invoked many references to the alien attack in the movie "Independence Day." ( See a photo of the cloud .)
